  • Je voudrais (jhe voo-dray) means "I would like...." and is a good and polite way to start any request in a restaurant, whether its I would like a table for two or I would like an orange juice.

  • Une reservation pour deux (oon ray-zer-va-shion poor duh) is a reservation for two

Coffee

French cafes are famous for their coffee. However to make sure you order thecoffee type of coffee you want here are some essential terms.

  • Café (ca-fay) is plain coffee with nothing added, but is strong as it is brewed like espresso.
  • Café au lait (ca-fay oh-lay) is simply coffee with steamed milk, and it's almost always wonderful. You will sometimes get the coffee served in one pot or in the cup, and then a pitcher of steamed milk to pour in as you please.
  • Café crème (ca-fay khremm) is coffee served in a large cup with hot cream.
  • Café Décafféiné (ca-fay day-ca-fay-n-ay) is decaffeinated coffee. You will still need to tell them you want milk (lait) or cream (crème) with your coffee.
  • Café Noisette (ca-fay nwah-zett) is espresso with a dash of cream in it. It is called "noisette," French for hazelnut, because of the rich, dark color of the coffee.
  • Café Americain (ca-fay a-meyhr-ee-kan) is filtered coffee, similar to traditional American coffee.
  • Café Léger (ca-fay lay-zjay) is espresso with double the water.

Other French coffee terms

Here are other terms that will come in useful when ordering coffee or visiting a French café:

  • Sucre - (soo-khruh) - sugar (You can requestcoffee this, although cafés typically bring a cup with two cubed sugars on the dish. Since French coffee is strong, you may want to request more, or ask, "Plus de sucre, s'il vous plait," ploo duh soo-khruh, seel voo play.)
  • Edulcorant - (ay-doohl-co-hrahn) - sweetener

  • Chocolat chaud (shaw-ko-lah show) - hot chocolate

  • The au lait (tay-oh-lay) - tea with milk

  • un orangina (un orangina)  - a bottle of orangina - a favourite drink in France

  • du l'eau (doo low) water
  • un verre d’eau
  • une bouteille du vin
  • une carafe du vin or a demi-carafe or a pichet de vin (peeshay du vin)

We have found that the campsites described are very good but we find that it is difficult to find a campsite which has 100% of what you are looking for.  Also one person may love a busy campsite with lots of activities while someone else may love a quiet campsite with a small swimming pool.
