Description of Le Chatelet Campsite, St Cast le Guildo

The Le Châtelet campsite in St Cast-le Guildo is a lovely small campsite on the north coast of Brittany, only a 45 minutes's drive (22 miles) from St Malo

The proximity to the beach is one of the main attractions of this site. Small paths from the site lead down to two fantastic beaches which have lovely sand and are excellent for swimming.

St Cast View

One of the paths is a clifftop path and is not suitable for buggies and is only suitable for children if you can be sure they will stay to one side as they are walking as there are steep drops to the side from this path. There is an alternative route via the road and it would also be possible to take your car round as there is parking at the beach as well.

The site has excellent facilities :

  • a swimming pool and a toddler pool
  • a well stocked shop, which has deliveries of fresh bread and croissants in the mornings (check opening hours) (13/05 - 03/09)
  • a take away (19/06 - 29/08)
  • a bar (13/05 - 03/09) with excellent evening entertainment, including karaoke in four languages which we enjoyed, discoes and concerts
  • playgrounds
  • an excellent restaurant "La Marmitte" within 5 minutes walk

There is a market which takes place once a week in the small square just along from the campsite and a larger market which takes place weekly in the main town of St Cast.  The centre of St Cast is walkable, although it is a fairly long walk, down some interesting lanes. St Cast itself has a lovely long, wide beach, with a sailing club. The town itself has nice restaurants and shops which are nice to walk around. There is also a small supermarket in the centre.

Close to the campsite is a restaurant we would recommend called La Marmitte at 35, rue du moulin Billy. French and English menus are available and the food is good and staff are friendly. We visited in early July and were able to get a seat easily earlier in the evening but I would imagine it will get very busy in high season and booking may be essential.

Places to Visit in and around St Cast

The walled town of St Malo is definitely worth a visit. There are many fantastic shops and restaurants within its walls.  You can also enjoy watching the artists or if you are brave enough you can have  your caricature painted !

The town has a fantastic history stretching back to the days of pirates, or corsaires, who set off from here, and leading right up to the recent history during the second world war in 1944 when many buildings within the walled town were bombed. The restoration job is so well done that you would never guess that many of the buildinst malo wallsgs have been restored.

The 2 hour walk around the ramparts will give  you some magnificent views of the coast and islands. There are many access points to the ramparts so you can chose to join or leave them at many points.

The photograph to the left shows a view of the port of St Malo taken from the walk around the ramparts. tall ship

There is always something to see around the port area. Here is a tall ship from the Tall Ships Race 2006 at St Malo.

St Malo has an excellent bus Park and Ride facility which is a great way to get into the walled city.

Other days out from St Cast include :

  • Cobac Park

This theme park is at Lanhelin, 46 km away and is a great day out for families with children.

  • the Grand Aquarium at St Malo
  • .
  • Mont St Michel - a magnificent abbey on an island. One of the first sites to be included on UNESCO's World Heritage List. This is busy but well worth a visit if you haven't already been to this most visitmont st micheled Tourist Attraction in France !  The narrow streets can get busy in high season and you may find them difficult with very young children and buggies. If you have young children and are desperate to see it then it might be a good idea to try and get there as early as possible to avoid the crowds.

dinan

  • Dinan - a lovely town with a medieval atmosphere and old streets with beautifully restored, picturesque half timbered buildings. It is possible to take a boat trip from here on the Rance estuary which is well worth doing.  If you have young children with you then they will enjoy the zoo in the park of the Chateau de la Bourbansais where you can view all sorts of wild animals in the zoo as well as walk among lemurs. They also have one of the finest packs of horses and hounds in France who will demonstrate hunting at certain times.

boat

  • The Parc des Grandes Chenes, near Dol de Bretagne, with its miniature port on its boating lake and a fantastic mountain zipwire course with children's courses (see photographs below) that are not too high. The adult courses on the site vary in height but some are scarily high!

Other Campsites in the Area

Another campsite inland from this area is at Dol de Bretagne, which is about a half hour drive inland from Saint Malo, where you will find the large Chateau Des Ormes campsite. This site is very lively in high season, yet a favourite for all ages in May and June. The site is overlooked by the Château and set amidst 400 acres of wooded parkland. It is a family-run Castels parc which also has its own golf course and riding centre. This site has lots of activities and children's clubs for all ages but may not suit you in high season if you are looking for a quieter holiday.

Disclaimer: The reviews published on the site are intended solely for the purpose of providing general information and comment and are purely our opinions. We cannot guarantee that descriptions on this site are accurate, up to date or free from error.

We have found that the campsites described are very good but we find that it is difficult to find a campsite which has 100% of what you are looking for.  Also one person may love a busy campsite with lots of activities while someone else may love a quiet campsite with a small swimming pool. Actually we tend to be the latter ! So what we have done is highlight the good points of the sites and maybe point out a few of what we have found as slightly negative points. However we strongly recommend that you make full use of as many internet sources as possible before deciding about your holiday, including other review sites and Google maps etc.
