Description Booking Your Holiday Getting There Things to do in the AreaDescription of Le Clarys Plage Campsite
Le Clarys Plage is a very popular campsite just ten minu
tes walk
from the beach and 5 miles south of the popular resort of
St Jean de Monts. St Jean
de Monts has a real holiday atmosphere with a boulevard and many
lovely shops and restaurants.
There is a great beach about 500 metres from Le Clarys Plage,
the "Plage des Mouettes" or "Merlin Plage" and a 20 minute
cycle will take you to the big St Jean de Monts beach.
The site is very well kept and has excellent facilities, although it can get busy in the high season of July and August. If you are looking for a quieter stay you may be better to go outwith these months or perhaps try a campsite in a quieter area !
The site is a large site with 444 emplacements for mobile homes/tents. Some of the mobile homes are across a road from the main facilities.
The campsite offers the following :
- a fantastic waterpark with a covered pool and swimming pools and water chutes to suit all ages and a jacuzzi. There is a twisty water chute and 7 water slides for children aged over 7. The pool depth varies from 0.3m to 1.5m so will suit toddlers to adults. There is a sun terrace with sun loungers at the pool. Regulations for the pool include no shorts, no t-shirts, no inflatables, parental supervision required. Men and boys will be required to wear the speedo style swimming trunks rather than the baggy short type so remember to pack these to avoid having to buy them when you get there !

Things to do in the Area
St Jean de Monts
There is plenty to see and do in the area around St Jean de Monts.
This interactive Google Map has been set up by the St Jean de Monts Office de Tourisme. It has various beaches, activites, restaurants, hotels and campsites in St Jean de Monts marked on it. You may find it useful. I suggest you select the places on the left hand side one at a time otherwise you end up with a profusion of markers all over the map ! Click here to see map.
There is a music festival MUSIQUE OCEANE et FEUX DE LA ST JEAN from 19th June to 23rd June.
There is lots arranged for kids at St Jean de Monts- click here for more information.
Atlantic Toboggan Waterpark
Just south of St Jean de Monts is the Altlantic Toboggan Waterpark, with water chutes, toboggans, wave pool, restaurant etc. (Website www.atlantic-toboggan.com). Entrance costs 18Euro for adults 12Euros for children aged 3-12. Unfortunately no lower entrance cost for adults like me who would be too afraid to go on the water chutes !!
St Gilles Croix de Vie
Has an excellent beach and also a nice fishing port to visit.
Apremont
Visit the delightful village of Apremont with its ruined Renaissance castle and lake. There are pedaloes on the lake and a beach.
Planète Sauvage
This safari park can be found 1 hr 15 mins from St Jean de Monts at Port Saint-Père. You can drive through the savannah area and see wild mammals such as lions and giraffes. You can view them by taking a trip in a 4x4 truck that lets you get close to the animals or view the animals from rope bridges. This park contributes to the conservation of many species and there are something like 250 births of young animals each year at the park. I am not sure if the dolphin Cite de la Mer is open to the public but if it is there are underwater viewing tunnels which sound excellent. Tickets can be purchased via the website and there are some special offers there. (www.planetesauvage.com/)
Sealand Aquarium at Ile Noirmoutier

On the island of Noirmoutier you will find a good aquarium with an excellent selection of fish from around the world including warm and cold water fish plus a number of tropical aquariums.

Zoo at Sables d'Olonne
The zoo at Les Sables d'Olonne is the home to hundreds of
animals living in a luxurious setting.
Animals include penguins, monkeys, otters, lions, tigers and pandas.
Velo Rail
At Commequiers (22 kms or a 30 minutes drive from Clarys Plage), there is a Velo Rail with 10 kms of rail to cycle on through the countryside (http://www.cc-atlancia.fr/tourisme/le-velo-rail/).
Puy du Fou
This is 125 kms away (1 hr 45 mins drive), but you may well decide it is worth it to drive this distance to see this excellent and very popular historic theme park. Visit a reconstructed medieval village, watch Roman gladiators battling in an amphitheatre or vikings or witness the birds of prey show. There is also evening performances of fireworks or the excellent night time spectacle of the Cinescenie, which involves hundreds of actors and horses, re-enacting historic scenes. (This takes place late starting at 10pm or 10.30 pm so is probably not suitable for very young children) The park does not open every day and the Cinescenie only takes place on certain days so it is best to check with the Puy du Fou website (www.puydufou.com) before setting off. The entrance fee is also quite expensive. The only tip I can find is that if you are booking with Keycamp they have a small 5Euro money off voucher but also if you take an old radio or something that receives radio then you do not need to pay to hire the expensive head sets to hear an English translation.

We have found that the campsites described are very good but we find that it is difficult to find a campsite which has 100% of what you are looking for. Also one person may love a busy campsite with lots of activities while someone else may love a quiet campsite with a small swimming pool. Actually we tend to be the latter ! So what we have done is highlight the good points of the sites and maybe point out a few of what we have found as slightly negative points. However we strongly recommend that you make full use of as many internet sources as possible before deciding about your holiday, including other review sites and Google maps etc.
