Learning French

Here are some of the books we recommend for learning French.

The Collins Easy Learning French Dictionary is an excellent Dictionary. It is aimed at school pupils but would also suit everyone. It has up to date words and some useful phrases as well and lists some common verbs. I would thoroughly recommend this book. I have also shown the more advanced Collins Robert French Dictionary for more advanced speakers and the Collins Gem Dictionary (10.8 x 7.8 x 3.6 cm) for a smaller size of Dictionary :

The AA French Phrase Book for Kids is a good French phrase book with some up-to-date French words and phrases. Aimed at children of approximately age 10-15 who are maybe about to go on a French holiday or a French exchange but in fact everyone would learn something from this little book as it has loads of up to date information.

Two books which are excellent for teenagers or adult learners are :

The Oxford French Vocabulary Builder is an excellent book. It uses cartoon strips featuring Clare Bretécher's character Agrippine, who teenagers may relate to and the cartoons should make vocabulary learning both efficient and enjoyable. There are thirty cartoon strip and themes and there is a clear emphasis on spoken language as it is actually spoken in France and with many examples of up to date vocabulary.  The Grammaire en Clair book also uses a cartoon based approach to illstrate various grammatical points.

I find that when we are in France I end up buying lots of French children's books and quizzes. Its an excellent and fun way to learn French.

Here are some non-fiction fun French information books aimed at children but useful for anyone learning French !

And to test what you know here are some quizzes :

And how many of these historic dates do you know ?!

And why not see if you can answer some questions which French 7 year olds can answer ! This is one of my favourites ! There are other books in this range for different ages as well. Search for the publisher "Play Bac" on Amazon to find other examples :

We have found that the campsites described are very good but we find that it is difficult to find a campsite which has 100% of what you are looking for.  Also one person may love a busy campsite with lots of activities while someone else may love a quiet campsite with a small swimming pool. Actually we tend to be the latter ! So what we have done is highlight the good points of the sites and maybe point out a few of what we have found as slightly negative points. However we strongly recommend that you make full use of as many internet sources as possible before deciding about your holiday, including other review sites and Google maps etc.
