Driving in France

Here are some of books to help you with driving in France.

On our first trip to France we didnt realise that the term "Aire de ......." indicated a service station !  On our second trip we worked it out ! Essential on certain motorway style routes although non existent on more local roads.  They vary between an almost open air toilet block with picnic tables nearby to service stations just like we have in the UK.  I have discovered this book which says that it is very useful for motorhome travellers. I am not sure if it would also be useful just as a general guide to service stations but I will see if I can find out. Looks like an interesting book though and essential for motor home users looking for a cheap stopover :

I have no idea how useful the following book is as I haven't read it myself but if you are concerned about driving in France and want to know how to say everything to do with your car then this might be for you  !

Here is an online guide to some of the main rules about driving although it doesnt cover road signs.

We found that a Sat Nav or Satellite Navigation was a very useful device and helped immensely when driving through France. It kept us right about which road to take etc which yes could have been done with a map but I think we made far fewer mistakes by having a Sat Nav. I would recommend a Tom Tom which was the one we had, and if you have a long dashboard then you may want an XL extra wide screen version. And remember to get one with maps of Europe already downloaded. Here are some from Amazon. I think the live one is a version which does live traffic updates but please check all the details to confirm this as I am no gadget expert !

We will be adding further books all the time as we develop our site.

We have found that the campsites described are very good but we find that it is difficult to find a campsite which has 100% of what you are looking for.  Also one person may love a busy campsite with lots of activities while someone else may love a quiet campsite with a small swimming pool. Actually we tend to be the latter ! So what we have done is highlight the good points of the sites and maybe point out a few of what we have found as slightly negative points. However we strongly recommend that you make full use of as many internet sources as possible before deciding about your holiday, including other review sites and Google maps etc.
